Istanbul, July 19th

Hard to believe, but this is our third night in Istanbul!  What a great city!  I must admit that I expected things to be very different here - yet I find many similarities.  Istanbul appears to be a city of hardworking people, that take pride in their home.  It is a huge port, with many ocean freighters gliding up and down the Bosphorus - just like our own lake freighters on the Detroit River.  Cherries are one of the most popular fruits here, with fresh cherries out daily in the buffet at our hotel and cherrry juice being offered in all restaurants.

We have resolved to take our little Turkish/English translation dictionary with us on excursions now as not as many people speak English as I originally thought.  (thus resulting in a taxi ride today to the train station vs the ferry station-fortunately nearby each other).  By and large, most natives are genuinely friendly and try to help out as best they can with the communication gaps.  I will report back later if the dictionary investment pays off or gets us into bigger trouble!  :)
